About Us

In 2004, a group of residents from Lowton joined forces to form “Lowton & Golborne Fairtrade Steering Group”.

We intended to achieve Fairtrade Zone status for Lowton & Golborne. However, we soon realised that there was boroughwide interest in Fairtrade, and so we expanded our plans, and changed our name to Wigan Borough Fairtrade Group!

The group is now supported by United Co-Op who share the same belief in fairly traded products, and we became a Co-Op members group.

We achieved Fairtrade town status in February 2007, and continue to raise awareness of fairly traded products in Wigan as much as possible, we are always planning events to give people the opportunity to try the products and find out more about why fair trade is important, so if you know of an event that our group could attend please contact us enquiries@wiganfairtrade.org.uk

Although Wigan was awarded Fairtrade Town Status in February 2007, we still have much work to do, to maintain Fairtrade Status we need to increase Fairtrade availability in the borough.  You can help either as a consumer or a business, please see our News page.
